Video Conference Follow-up & Lemming Release

Thanks for a great video-conference today!

Because of the travel time between the research site and the cottage in Cherry Hill, I was really only able to check our traps, release the animals, reset the traps before having to come back for our talk.

I hope that you learned something new from myself and from Principal Investigator Dr. Chris Newman from the University of Oxford.

Last night we had a very informative lecture from Dr. Newman about how climate change is impacting small mammals and what that means for us as well as the animals. It was both nuanced and engaging. Tonight we're heading to do some beaver watching (weather permitting), so look for a new post tomorrow!

Today's Question: What are some of the characteristics of the Souther Bog Lemming that I released today?

  1. They have round thick bodies covered with grey-brown fur with silver grey underparts. They have a large head, short legs and a short tail which is lighter underneath. Their small ears are barely visible through their fur. Their upper incisors are grooved. They are 13 cm long with a 2 cm tail and weigh about 35 g. -Chase B.

  4. The Southern Bog Lemming is a resemblance to the Eastern Meadow Vole just a bit smaller. Some characterisitics of this animal is that it has a small chunky body with a broad skull. this animal on its forefoot has four toes and the hind has five. Also this animal has a brown grey fur that gives it a grizzled appearance

  7. The characteristics in the lemming that you released that I noticed are that it was more stable around humans than usual after its experience i presume but, of coarse, startled once closer to it.

  9. I did some research on the lemming and i found out that they are quite cute. But i aslo learned that they have many predators that are much faster and bigger than the lemming so the lemming has a lot to watch out for. Another interesting fact i learned about the lemming is that it is a rather small mouse looking mammel.

  10. They feed on grasses and are mainly active at night. Most of them live less than a year. Contrary to popular belief, they don't commit "mass suicide". When population booms, they migrate. If a cliff, body of water, or other deadly obstacle is in the way, they still try to cross it. It's not that they want to die, they just don't always realize that the puddle they're trying to cross is really the ocean.

  13. For their body they have a huge head; but short legs, tail and a small ear. It has brown fur and is considered brown and gray. Looks like a mouse on first look, too.

  19. The Southern Bog Lemming has a big head with short legs, a short tail, and a thick body. They eat greens, are generally active at night, and live in underground burrows with small colonies of other lemmings. Because of less wetland habitat, they're becoming less widespread.
